Your child has just joined a local cricket club or school team — congratulations. Now comes the question every cricket parent faces: what kit do they actually need, and what size? This guide covers everything from bat sizing by age group to UK helmet safety standards, so you can shop with confidence.

Bat Sizes by Age Group

Cricket bats come in sizes 0 through to Short Handle adult. Using the wrong size will restrict your child's technique and make batting unnecessarily difficult.

Size 0 to 1 — Ages 4 to 6. Lightweight plastic or Kashmir Willow bats suitable for garden cricket and first introduction to the game.

Size 2 to 3 — Ages 6 to 9. The most common size for primary school aged players just starting club cricket.

Size 4 — Ages 9 to 11. Good for players around 4 feet 3 inches to 4 feet 9 inches tall.

Size 5 — Ages 11 to 13. Suits players from 4 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 2 inches.

Size 6 (Harrow) — Ages 13 to 15. A transitional size between junior and full adult. Suits players from 5 feet 2 inches to 5 feet 6 inches.

Short Handle Adult — Ages 15 and above, or players over 5 feet 6 inches. This is the standard adult bat size used at all club and professional levels.

Always measure height rather than relying on age alone — children develop at different rates.

Essential Protective Gear

A complete junior kit should include all of the following before your child faces their first delivery in a proper match:

Batting Helmet — The single most important piece of protective equipment. Never allow a junior to bat or keep wicket without a properly fitted helmet. More on safety standards below.

Batting Pads — Should reach from just above the ankle to just above the knee. They must not restrict running between the wickets. Try them on in store to check the fit.

Batting Gloves — Sized to the hand, not the body. The knuckle rolls should sit correctly over each finger joint. Too large and they reduce grip and control.

Abdominal Guard — Essential for boys from the moment they start facing serious bowling. Available in junior sizes.

Thigh Pad — Provides protection on the leading leg from straight deliveries and yorkers.

Elbow Guard — Protects the lead arm from short-pitched bowling. Particularly important on hard, bouncy wickets.

UK Helmet Safety Standards

This is critical. In the UK, junior cricket helmets must conform to the ECB's recommended standard: BS 7928:2013 with the 2019 amendment, also known as the Kitemark standard. This updated standard introduced a tighter grille spacing to prevent balls from passing through the gap between the peak and the grille.

When buying a helmet in the UK, look for the BSI Kitemark symbol on the helmet itself or its packaging. Avoid purchasing second-hand helmets as you cannot verify their history of impact. A helmet that has absorbed a serious blow should be replaced regardless of visible damage.

Kit Bags

A junior kit bag should have a separate bat sleeve or pocket to prevent bat edges being damaged by other equipment during transport. Look for bags with ventilated wet and dry compartments — this keeps damp pads from contaminating the rest of the kit.

Budgeting for Junior Cricket Kit

If you are buying a first kit and are not sure how long your child will continue with the sport, prioritise the helmet and pads first. These items affect safety and cannot be compromised on.

For the bat, a decent Kashmir Willow bat in the right size is perfectly adequate for junior club cricket. English Willow becomes worth the investment once your child is playing regularly and has developed a sound technique.
